This video uses the (wonderfully named) Suck Less Audio Plugin for Fusion in DaVinci Resolve. The plugin creates a bridge between the soundtrack in a video (or another audio track) and a visual element. It’s the kind of effect you often see used to create a sonic visualisation where there is some sync between the visuals and music. In this case I am using it to trigger the opacity of a small white square which is placed and sized to represent the relative position of each actor in this short clip from Spies Like Us (1985).

Dr Cormac Donnelly is a Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at Liverpool John Moores University. His research interests include Film Sound, Film Craft, and Videographic Criticism. He has published video essays in NECSUS, The Cine-Files, [in]Transition, and Screenworks and his work has been screened at festivals in Rome and Marienbad and at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York. He is an associate editor at the journal [in]Transition.
